5 Things College Students Must Start Doing Right Now
Happy New Year, Bright Interns!
Some of you still in holiday but there are also some of you who have already back with our routines. Wherever you’re, new semester of college is coming and you need to prepare yourself. Along with the new beginning, why don’t you try to challenge yourself to start something new?
To help you get the idea, here are 5 things college students must start doing right now
Explore yourself
College is the ideal time to be exploring what you want to know about yourself. Your experiences shape you as an individual, and they have even more of an impact when you’re an adult. Twenty years down the road, you’d rather regret having done something rather than regret not having done it because you’ll have had that experience regardless. So don’t box yourself into what you think is best; Let's start doing right now!
Focus on building relationship
Mentors and role models can be people your own age, so make sure to find them while you can during college. Focus on building these relationships while you’re on campus because it’s much harder to stay in touch and see your friends in the working world. If you develop these friendships during college, you’ll have a strong network of supporters to rely on when you graduate.
Get to know your professors
You don’t need to be pals with your teachers, just worthy of inclusion in their LinkedIn networks. That means talking to them after class about courses, research projects, and internships that can help you achieve your post-graduate goals. Your efforts will pay off in more personalized letters of recommendation and maybe even introductions to potential employers.
Get work experience
College is one of the best times to gain work experience. It’s the time where you should figure out what you love doing, and what you don’t love doing. It is also the time to learn what you are good at, and what you are bad at. Try different types of jobs in college so that you can start understanding what you want to do when you graduate.
Don’t default to the same part-time job or internship every summer. Instead, try to get as much and as varied work experiences as you can! When you graduate, if you get a new job every six months, that looks very bad. However, during college, it is completely fine to have a new job every semester.
Be open to others’ perspectives
Now that you’re out in the real world, you’ll quickly learn that it’s so much more than the bubble that you’ve lived in for eighteen years. There are others out there with so many different experiences, from so many different walks of life, that you will not always agree with their views. That, however, does not invalidate them. Learn to accept this truth, and be willing to agree to disagree in a respectful, dignified manner; it’ll expand your horizon as well as the other person’s!
Learn time management
As a student, your schedule is probably all over the place, and if you’re working, then there’s only so much time you have to yourself. So learn time management! You won’t have time to make impromptu decisions without giving up on one of your other engagements, so make sure you know what fits into your schedule where. Create a weekly plan, and follow through on it.
College is as demanding as it is fun. You’ll definitely face challenges along the way, but that’s your test to be a fully functioning adult, to keep grinding. Keep working towards your potential at your own pace, and things will fall in line!
