Things to Know Before Going to Valencia

Valencia is an absolutely enchanting city. From pretty buildings to delicious food, museums to beaches, sciences to arts; Valencia has it all.  Though it’s a small city, it still packs a punch with lots of exciting things to do and see. Here are a few things you should know before going to Valencia.

It’s full of street art

As the city of sciences and arts, this must be not surprising. Valencia is an extremely creative city filled with art and music, and street murals are just one of the ways Valencians show this creative side. You can just walking around the Old Time while admiring the amazing architecture and the colorful street art.

It’s the home of paella

In case you don’t know, paella is a Spanish dish made of white rice, green beans, meat, white beans, snails, and seasoning such as saffron and rosemary. It’s cooked and and served in a large shallow pan.

As every Valencian you meet will proudly tell you, paella originally comes from Valencia and nowhere else. This is a very big deal for Valencians and they’ll be only too happy to tell you how everyone else is doing paella wrong. On the plus side, this means the city has many of amazing paella restaurants. So, Before going to Valencia, make sure that visiting Paella restaurant is on your bucket list!

The locals love fire!

Valencians really love fire and fireworks. The city’s famous Las Fallas is a festival of fire, filled with firework displays called mascletàs and culminating in la cremà, the night when the city is filled with bonfires. Around Las Fallas the streets sound like a war zone, as Valencians young and old throw endless firecrackers. There are also mascletàs held year round for all sorts of other events including state holidays, weddings, and seemingly random Tuesdays.

It hardly ever rains

It rains in Valencia but the city is definitely not a "rainy" area. It will not be cold and, in fact, it’s rarely cold in Valencia. The average temperature in the city rarely drops below 10°C, even in winter. There is a guaranteed minimum of 8 hours of sunshine per day.

Accessible public transport

The public transport system in Valencia is very good. There is a large network of buses and the metro sprawls far outside of the urban limits. Great news, you can definitely rely on Google Maps to find the best way of getting to your destination. You can also walk if you don't mind a good stretch of the legs because the city is definitely walkable.
