5 Activities to Keep Your Mood Up & Avoid Burnout During Your Internship Abroad

Far from family and friends might feel hard at the beginning of your internship abroad. Feeling homesick, lonely, or a bit overwhelmed is normal, especially during the first 1-2 months. You’re in a new environment, meeting new people, and of course, you have to adapt to a different culture.

But, don’t worry! There are a few simple ways you can keep your mood and enjoy your internship abroad without easily feeling burned out.

  1. Try Local Food

One way to get to know a new culture better is by trying local food. Besides being a new experience, trying various local dishes can also make you familiar with your surroundings.

  1. Hang-out with Coworkers

Don’t hesitate to socialize with your coworkers at the internship. Usually, they’ll also happily invite you to hang out and get to know the surrounding area. You can join them in various activities, like camping, hiking, hanging out, or just eating together after work. Besides giving you activities outside of work, interacting with coworkers can also help you feel more comfortable and not too lonely in a new country.

  1. Do Exercise

You can start with simple activities like walking or jogging. In many countries, pedestrian areas and public spaces are quite comfortable for walking. So, you can take advantage of the time after work or on your day off to go for a relaxed walk while enjoying the surrounding atmosphere.

  1. Stay Connected with Family and Friends in Home Country

Even if you’re in different countries, take the time to video call or just share stories with family and friends. Even when you’re far away, it doesn’t mean you have to lose touch with the people closest to you.

  1. Have Me-Time

Besides working and socializing, you also need to make time for yourself. Use your free time to do things you enjoy, like watching movies, reading books, journaling, listening to music, or just reading

So, those are a few ways you can keep your mood up while doing an internship abroad.  Adaptation does take time, so it’s okay if you need some time to feel comfortable with the new environment.
