Internship is Not a Trial, It’s a Career Investment
Many students might think that an internship is just something they need to complete academic requirements or simply a formality to graduate. But the truth is, an internship is not just a trial, but it’s a long-term investment for your career. How come?
When you’re doing an internship, you’re not just learning about work. You actually do real work. You join meetings, work with other people, and help finish real tasks. From there, you can improve useful skills like how to talk well with others, how to work in a team, how to solve problems, and how to manage your time. These are the kinds of skills that companies look for when hiring new employees.
Some of the world’s most successful people started small through internships or entry-level jobs. Before becoming one of the richest people in the world, Bill Gates did an internship at the Seattle Legislative Council when he was just 18. Being in a government environment taught him discipline and sparked his passion for innovation. Just two years later, in 1975, he founded Microsoft. Steve Jobs also gained experience through an internship at an electronics company called Red, where he learned about design and technology, skills that helped shape Apple. Even Elliot Hill, the former CEO of Nike, started as an intern. With dedication and hard work, he climbed the ladder and eventually led one of the world’s biggest sports brands. These successful individuals didn’t become legends overnight they built their careers step by step, starting from the bottom.
If you show good performance during your internship, it’s possible that you’ll be offered a permanent position or get a great recommendation letter. Besides that, you can also meet new people who might help you in the future. And most importantly, you’ll find out what kind of job or field you like, or what doesn't suit you. That’s important for your future career plans
So don’t treat your internship like it’s “just practice.” Take it seriously. Be curious, work hard, and show your best. The time and effort you put in now can really help your future career.
