Land an Internship in Kyoto, the Charming City of Honshu

Former capital of Japan, which has been miraculously spared by the war bombings, Kyoto lies like a pearl in a cocoon of wild hills. It has a rare charm that can get you lost; if you have the chance to do an internship in Kyoto and live here some time, you might become a different person.

Back in the winter of 2017, I was backpacking in Japan and stayed in Kyoto for ten days, in a little hostel called Ayado (just between the Kamogawa river and the Gion district). You guessed it: I spent all my days wandering around, never getting tired of the little streets, the magical river that turned purple at night, the sushi restaurants and the shrines. The hill that marked the end of the city was just a few hundred meters away from my place. At the top of it, there was a shrine from which you could see the whole city and beyond - by clear weather, the towers of Osaka were even visible.

At the time, I played Yokobue, an Okinawan flute made in bamboo wood. One day, as I wandered alone on the hill, in a primitive bamboo forest, I lost it! It was like losing a part of my soul, or a very dear friend. In the evening, back on the colourful streets of Kyoto, near the river, I could see the deep red forest almost accusing me of having abandoned my Yokobue. I felt it would be nearly impossible to find it back, but two days later, I decided to try, at least. And guess what: I found it, in the middle of the bamboo forest.

Never give up. Make what is important to you count. Try and see the world, be bold. Kyoto is an incredible city that you may want to reach. And if you will work/do an internship in Kyoto, try to wander near the Kamogawa river, in Gion, and you may see from that point the temple lost in an ocean of trees.

Kyoto may be famous for its thousands of Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines, traditional wooden houses, geishas and tempting cuisine, but it is also an important spot for Japan’s leading hi-tech companies. The former Imperial capital is one of the country’s main academic hubs and has long established business ties with the rest of the world making it an excellent city to intern abroad in – particularly for business, IT, marketing, logistics and hospitality.
