Tips to Minimize Nervous Habits

Some people are just having a hard time in controlling their nervous habits. The habits can be nail-biting, hair-touching, leg-shaking, fidgety fingers. They know they shouldn’t do it but they just can’t help it. While it seems like it’s not harmful, nervous habits can become a life-long problem. If you happen to have nervous habits, it’s better for you to learn how to manage it. While it may not be easy to quit, there are possible ways to minimize nervous habits. Here are some most common nervous habits and how to minimize it.

Biting nails

Biting nails is the most common nervous habits. You might not realize that you do this and it’s hard for you to stop even though you’ve realized it. Though it can calm you down, biting nails is indeed a bad habits since it causes ragged-looking nails. One easy way to minimize this habit is  by putting coat nails with an unpleasant tasting substance in order to deter you from biting. You can also keep hands covered with gloves if possible. Lastly, reward yourself when you don’t bite your nails for a certain period of time.

Tapping foot

Another most common nervous habits is tapping foot. This can be seen as a sign of iiritation or impatience. If you’re trying tominimize this habit, try to remain standing if you have the option to stand up. This ill help you to avoid the temptation to tap your foot. Another way to help you minimize this habit is by planting your feet on the ground firmly. Check on them occasionally if it’s necessary. If you have the urge to tap, try to cross your legs.

Avoiding eye contact

Eye contact is a sign of respect. If you have this nervous habit, it can be a problem when you’re doing you internship and even when you;re doing the interview. Glancing down and lookinga way from people you’re talking to may be perceived as a lack of confidence, disrespect, and even rudeness. If you’re anxious about making eye contact, you can try to look at the person’s cheekbone orr their nose instead of lookingdirectly into their eyes. They won’t realize because you’re still looking at their face. However, you still need to make eye contact even if it’s just for a few seconds. Also, remind yourself to avoid looking down or away for a long periods of time.

Rushed speech

Another nervous habits that is hardly recognized is rushed speech. This can give you a problem because other people won’t understand you when you talk quickly. If you experience this habit, try to take a few deep breaths before answering a question or doing presentation. Try to practice what you have to say. You can record yourself talking if you want then listen to it. Make sure to speak slowly and enunciating wvery word.

Fidget fingers

This habit involves everything from tapping your fingers, playing with your wristwatch, or playing with the arm of a chair. This might appears to others that you’re someone who is unfocused or easy to get bored. To help your fidgety fingers stay still, avoid wearing wristwatch or bracelets when you’re going to your internship interview or important meeting. Try to keep your table free from items you can play with.

It’s imporatant to work on yourself and learn some of the tips above to minimize nervous habits as some of them can have harmful long-term effects. Once you try the tips, you’ll start to feel more comfortable and feel more at ease in social situasions.
